Nordic Beauty Pine Bark Extract
The Finnish pine (Pinus silvestris), growing in the harsh conditions of the North, creates a high level of antioxidants during its lifetime.
Nordic Beauty Pine Bark extract is made of the bark and the phloem of young pines. The extraction process is carried out according to traditional folklore, in addition to which information gained from tests made at different universities has also been taken into consideration.
Pine Bark Extract contains different phenolic compounds, mainly resveratrol and catechins, around 500 µg/ml in total. It can be considered an efficient antioxidant as it showed 95% inhibition of ex vivo low-density lipoprotein (LDL) oxidation.
The inhibition of hydroxyl radicals was tested in vitro with Pine Bark Extract, French maritime pine bark extract, green tea and vitamin C with FeCl3-chelate test. It was found out that Pine Bark extract showed 1,5 times more inhibition than French maritime pine bark extract and over ten times more than green tea and about five times more than vitamin C.
Application Areas : Pine Bark extract is ideal for skin care and sun care formulations. As a strong antioxidant it protects the skin from aging as it helps collagen renewal. It also has anti-inflammatory activity and can improve acne, as an anti-microbe it can improve wound healing. It is an ideal ingredient for sun creams of after sun products, as it inhibits inflammatory sunburn reaction.
Formulating : When formulating with Pine Bark extract high temperatures should be avoided to make sure that the antioxidants would not be destroyed. They are ideal for cold processes or they are recommended to add into products after emulsification. Typical use level: 1 – 5%.
